The Homeowner’s KitchenCRATE Experience

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?

What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?

I loved how professional everyone was and that there was no pressure to do more than I wanted. I appreciated the detailed estimate which resulted in no surprises at the end.

Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?

I was surprised that the team was able to finish ahead of schedule.

Day by Day Progress

(Note: We added a few extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons)

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1 – Demo Day!  On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors and drawers. We also reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new quartz counters. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.

Day 2 – The electrical team began the wiring for the new LED undercabinet lighting and new LED recessed lighting in the living room.  Five six-inch LED can lights were placed strategically around the living room while the existing can lights were replaced with new LED can lights. These lights are installed to maximize light levels for the most common countertop uses.

Day 3 – The cabinet modifications began. The desk was removed, the countertop was raised to match the height of the existing countertops and a cabinet was added leaving space for the new wine refrigerator. Near the sink, the trash compactor was replaced with pull out trash can. The sheetrock was also repaired and prepped for the new tile backsplash.

Day 4 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets in the kitchen.  Using a high-grade, oil-based primer, every inch of the kitchen cabinets were caulked, sanded and primed.  This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.

Day 5 – The painters then began refinishing the kitchen cabinets in this Pleasanton home. Two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy paint in Apollo Landing were applied to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets.  This same priming and painting process was used on the doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality.

Day 6 – The walls and ceiling were painted. Kelly-Moore Gallery Gray with an eggshell finish was applied to the walls in the kitchen and living room while Kelly-Moore Whitest White was applied to the ceiling.

Day 7 – The countertop installation team arrived to install the beautiful Kohler Vault single bowl sink in stainless steel in the kitchen along with the Samsung Everest White quartz countertops with a mitered edge.

Day 8 – The tile backsplash artisans were on site to install the Arizona Tile Bianco Venatino 4″ x 16″ polished marble tiles on the backsplash in the kitchen. This was grouted using Laticrete Smoke Gray grout.

Day 9 –  Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s appliances.  The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Brizo Solna single handle pull-down faucet and the Kohler Contemporary Design soap dispenser, each with a polished chrome finish, were installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
